The Friends of New London and students from Liberty University put on a very nice presentation for New London Day 2016. Mrs. Delores Nash Hicks and many of her african american friends held a very moving prayer service in the brush arbor beside the old african american church. Delores and several others led prayers and songs while everyone joined in. A tour of the old church led by Delores followed the service.
At Mead’s Tavern students put on displays while bluegrass bands performed on the front porch. One old car was on display at the old doctors office.
At the Friends of New London office building / church chapel, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Virginia Canals & Navigations Society and history students from Liberty University had displays. The students from Liberty, led by a man named Luke had an outstanding display and Luke was on his feet all day explaining the history of New London.
Outside the church/office a brass band from Liberty University played their music under a tree by the entrance to the chapel. What beautiful music! The sound was really amazing.
There was also a pop-up library and an old militia camp set up and a modern display of drones for sale.
After the ending time at 3:00 several people went on the last stop on the tour, just down US460 to the old cemetery for a tour.
New London Day 2016 was very nice and enjoyable.
See you next year,
